Hello friends!
In this blog, I’m reviewing Let Him In by William Friend. As usual, the first half of the review will be spoiler-free, and more about my overall thoughts. The second half will contain spoilers, so look away if you haven’t read the book yet.
Again… another book with a great idea but no payoff
Atmospheric.
I can’t give a reason as to why, but I really enjoyed the characters in the story. I was in the house with them. I wanted to live across from the park. Honestly, I could have lived in that world a little bit longer. Then I reached the last 40 pages and that’s when I lost interest on what was happening.
Don’t read this book for the plot. Don’t read it for the character arcs either. Spoiler… there aren’t any.
The ending makes no sense – not in a fun way either. I needed more.
This is the equivalent of a low-budget movie. Everything happens inside the house. There’s a small cast. The park is a character that’s always talked about but never shown on screen.
By the time I got to the end, I didn’t care anymore.
The foreshadowing was well-done at least.
When will the messed-up parents’ trope be over?
Let Him In had a skeleton unlike The Sight, but it had no facial features. Friend added in a lot of backstory, there just wasn’t an explanation as to why any of it mattered.
I am the person that needs to know why the demonic possessions are happening. Why the house is haunted. Why the creatures exist in this world. I can’t be dropped into the middle of it all… unless it’s How to Make a Horror Movie and Survive. That shit was well done.
Now look away if you don’t want spoilers.
Why doesn’t anyone go into the attic?
So the family conjures spirits?
There was only one tiny line as to how the grandfather died. That’s not enough. The house backstory is there, but tell me how it fits what’s happening in the house.
Was the monster the grandfather?
Did the monster kill the grandmother?
I’m fine with the convoluted ending… I just need to know how we got there.
Where did the real fucking dad go?????
Happy Reading!
Love,
Kait
