Hello friends!

In this blog, I’m reviewing Five Broken Blades by Mai Corland. As usual, the first half of the review will be spoiler-free, and more about my overall thoughts. The second half will contain spoilers, so look away if you haven’t read the book yet.

  • This is not Corland’s first book.

  • Not surprised to learn Corland was originally a YA author. This book reads very young adult and aging your characters isn’t the only thing that changes your genre tag.

  • Nothing about the story was interesting. I wasn’t intrigued but the characters, the plot, the world, or the writing.

  • Tell me how this book is unique. It felt like a rip off of all the stories before it.

  • Was the romance added because it was a part of the story or because it’s what’s selling right now?

  • So much adventure with so little reason.

  • Corland tried to form connections between the characters, but they didn’t work. She used fancy words that told me how to feel, in the same way the characters were told how to feel. There was no real emotional depth.

  • I needed a few redeeming qualities.

  • Everyone had these massive backstories. Too many leads in one story. Corland needed to pick a main voice and had the others pepper the story.

Now look away if you don’t want spoilers.

  • Mykail and Euryne had the only believable relationship because it started before the sotry.

  • Why did everyone have to couple up? The relationships were too convenient.

  • This book is an example of why the publishing industry is making me angry.

Happy Reading!

Love,

Kait
