Documentary Review | Immigration Nation
Rating: 100/100
The world is on fire right now. Anything and everything is wrong. And it feels like no matter where you turn, someone is getting hurt.
How do you focus on one cause when they all need your help?
I say, go where your heart leads you. My heart has led me to immigration. It’s a huge theme in my current book and a big part of my life. If my father-in-law had not made it to the states, I wouldn’t be with the man of my life. I know the universe was really rooting for us, but that might have been out of its powers. Maybe, with how many times we kept running into each other as children, fate would have found a way though.
With my luck I would have been 80.
Immigration Nation is not for the faint of heart. One of Netflix’s newest documentaries, it’s soul crushing without hope to carry you on. There’s only one or two happy endings in all six episodes. The documentary might not have even seen the light of day if ICE had their way, but hey… they’re the ones that agreed to do it in the first place. What did they think was going to happen? If your employees didn’t get the memo to act a certain why while filming, that’s your problem, not the production team’s.
And how did the production team get so lucky? How did they even get the shots to begin with? I think it’s because they smelled a lead and took it, diving into the trenches so they’d be there when the s*** hit the fan. ICE wasn’t prepared.
Broken into six parts, each episode covers a distinct issue with the immigration system. Coming to live in America is a complicated process that isn’t treated fairly, especially for those seeking amnesty. Even if a person does everything right, there is still a high likelihood that they won’t break past the barrier. The system is broken - plain and simple. Did everyone suddenly forget that we’re all essentially immigrants?
How about the fact that thousands of new ICE agents have been recruited?
I’m sorry for the rant. At this rate you won’t need to watch the documentary. But what I’m hoping to impart with all of this, is the dire need to understand what’s really going on. It’s all too easy to remove yourself from the situation. To be blind to the issues that are happening. Immigration Nation pulls back the veil so viewers can see the hard truths. Don’t worry. The producers are not interviewing just the righteous, creating a biased view of what’s happening. The issues can do that for themselves. Both sides are allowed ample time to shout on why they’re right.
What else can I say?
I’ll leave the political ranting for the documentary.
Oh yes… just a bit of advice… don’t watch while eating. You’ll need your hands to wipe away the tears.
(morbidly) Happy Watching
